Devotional: Walking in Your Calling

October 01 2023
Posted by Pastor Jake

In Mark 3:13-15, we find a profound truth about our relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus, the Son of God, called his disciples to himself before sending them out on a mission. This passage reminds us that our first and foremost calling in life is to be with Jesus. Just as he invited his disciples into his presence, he invites us into an intimate relationship with him. This calling is not based on our qualifications or achievements but on his grace and love for us. It’s an invitation to spend time in his presence, to know him deeply, and to be transformed by his love and truth. In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to forget that our primary purpose is to be with Jesus, to seek his face in prayer, study his Word, and experience the joy of communion with him. This foundational calling reminds us that our identity is rooted in Christ, and it is from this identity that our second calling emerges.

Our second calling, as seen in this passage, is a commission that Jesus gives us. Just as he sent out his disciples to preach, cast out demons, and heal the sick, he sends us into the world to be his ambassadors and witnesses. Our commission flows from our communion with Christ. When we have spent time with him, we are equipped and empowered by his Spirit to carry out the tasks he has entrusted to us. This commission varies from person to person but always serves the ultimate purpose of glorifying God and advancing his kingdom. Whether it’s sharing the gospel with a friend, serving the needy, or using our gifts and talents for his glory, our second calling is an expression of our love for Christ and our desire to make him known to the world.

As you reflect on these verses, remember that you have been called to be with Jesus, to know him intimately, and to walk closely with him. And from that place of abiding in him, you are called to fulfill a unique commission that only you can carry out. Let this truth inspire you to seek his presence daily, to be filled with his love and grace, and to joyfully embrace the mission he has entrusted to you. In this divine calling, you will find purpose, fulfillment, and the abundant life that Jesus promises to all who follow him.

Questions For Meditation

  1. How often do you prioritize being with Jesus in your daily life? What steps can you take to deepen your relationship with Him?
  1. Reflect on your own unique talents, gifts, and abilities. In what ways do you think Jesus might be calling you to use them for His kingdom and His glory?
  1. Are there moments when you feel inadequate or unqualified for the tasks you believe God has called you to? How can you rely on His strength and grace in those moments?
  1. Think about a time when you experienced the transformative power of spending time in God’s presence. How did that impact your ability to fulfill your commission for Him?
  1. What specific mission or purpose do you believe God has placed on your heart? How can you align your daily actions and decisions with that calling?
  1. In what ways can you share your own experience of being with Jesus and fulfilling your commission with others to encourage them in their own faith journey?
