Mom’s Devotional — Introduction

April 28 2022
Posted by Pastor Toledo

The book of Proverbs is part of what is called wisdom literature in the Bible. It is a collection of wise sayings and practical instructions for godly living, mainly attributed to King Solomon. It was King Solomon who famously asked God for a wise and understanding mind so that he could be an effective leader for God’s people (1 Kings 3:9). The goal of Proverbs is clearly spelled out in the very first chapter:

To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth…”

-Proverbs 1:2- 4 (ESV)

This 7-day devotional will focus on Proverbs 31, the very last chapter of the book, known for its description of a truly noble and excellent woman. In its original Hebrew language, the bulk of the chapter is written in the form of an acrostic poem, with each verse corresponding to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

It can be intimidating to read about the “Proverbs 31 woman,” who seems to be perfect in every way. But this chapter should not be read as a narrative or a description of one specific woman. It is best understood as a collection of God’s truth, illustrating what a life guided by wisdom looks like. As women who love God, we are wise to consider the characteristics celebrated in this chapter and how to apply them to our lives.

Our prayer is that this devotional will help you to know wisdom and instruction and grow in the fear of the Lord, the only source for wisdom. We recommend you read the entire chapter at the beginning of the week, before moving into the daily readings. For deeper study, take some time to look up any supporting verses provided in the daily reflections.
