When he finally had the opportunity to name his two sons, he chose names that reflected his gratitude towards God’s goodness and faithfulness. Joseph named his firstborn son Manasseh, saying, “For God has made me forget all my toil and all my father’s house.” This name symbolized Joseph’s ability to let go of the pain and bitterness from his past and embrace the new life God had granted him. The name of his second son, Ephraim, carried the meaning of “God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.” It was a testament to the abundant blessings Joseph received in the foreign land where he had endured so much suffering.

Moving forward to Genesis 50, after the death of their father, Joseph’s brothers feared that he would seek revenge for the evil they had done to him. However, Joseph responded with remarkable compassion and forgiveness. He reassured them, saying, “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.” Joseph recognized that despite the pain and injustice he had experienced, God had a greater purpose in allowing those events to unfold. His perspective was one of trust and faith in God’s sovereignty, acknowledging that even the darkest intentions of others could be turned around for good. By forgiving his brothers and embracing reconciliation, Joseph demonstrated the transformative power of forgiveness and the ability to see God’s hand at work in all circumstances.
