Devotional: An Everyday Miracle

August 26 2019
Posted by Pastor Jake

The disciple Peter is found in a situation where he feels the need to defend and justify Jesus, whereas in reality, Jesus comes to Peter and shows him that he’s the one who does the defending and justifying. And in this process Peter gets to be a witness and participant to an Everyday Miracle. To accomplish this miracle, Jesus needed to do two things: first, to interrupt Peter’s situation, and second, to give him further instruction. This pattern is customary for all of Jesus’ followers en route to seeing everyday miracles.

Questions for Meditation:

  1. Do you find yourself relegating God to only the hills (good times) and valleys (bad times) of your life? If yes, why do you think this is so? How can you adjust to this tendency in the coming week?

  2. Can you, with Brother Lawrence, say that even in the noise and clatter of your kitchen you possess God with great tranquility? The same way you do during Sunday morning worship? If not, how can you take steps to get to this place?

  3. In retrospect, have you noticed any everyday miracles that you missed during the moment? How can we become more aware of God’s intervening hand in the mundane moments of life?

  4. Jesus steps into Peter’s situation, not because he needs to, but because he wants to calm his concerns. What a caring and compassionate God.  Meditate on how much he cares about you today and let him work His love deep into your heart and mind.

  5. Do you ever sense that God has put you on “Do Not Disturb?” What verses in Scripture speak against this notion that God isn’t listening?

  6. The everyday monotony is what really comprises most of our lives. To miss God in these moments is to miss God regularly. What is an everyday moment where you can intentionally recognize God’s presence and relationship this week?

  7. Sometimes we feel silly doing the simple things that God calls us to do. In reality, God takes the simple things and turns them into great things—things that change our life and the lives of people around us. How can you fight against this sense of feeling silly in the simple tasks?
